Don’t get TICKED this summer

April 01, 20252 min read

Hey there! Heads-up about ticks  those little guys can carry some real nasty diseases Lyme Disease. Here’s a friendly guide to how to avoid them and stay safe.

How to Dodge Ticks

  • Stick to open, grassy areas and avoid bushy overgrown areas where ticks like to hang out.

  • Practice checking yourself and the kids throughout the day. Pay special attention to the head and neck region where ticks tend to hide.

  • Monitor your clothing for any ticks seeking a ride.

  • If you own pets, confine them to trimmed spaces and examine them daily as well. They can also inadvertently introduce ticks into your environment.

People living in tick-infected areas should:

If you’ll be in a tick-prone place:

  • Wear your pants tucked into your socks or boots and wear light-coloured clothing so ticks are easier to see.

  • Clean up your yard: do not let the grass grow too long, rake leaf litter off the ground next to your home.

  • Trim back any shrubs that overhang paths or play areas to reduce the chance of encountering ticks.

Did You Know?

  • Ticks hang out in tall grass or shrubs but they can't jump or fly. They might drop from above though, so stay alert!

  • Ticks are actually part of the spider family, not insects. They have four pairs of legs and don’t have antennae.

Tick Bites

  • Unlike other bugs that bite and run, ticks stick around and feed for a couple of days.

  • If bitten, the tick burrows its head under your skin and starts its meal, which can last from 2-3 days.

Are ticks in NSW harmful?

The paralysis tick can cause some pretty nasty reactions in NSW, but there's been no evidence they spread Lyme disease like in other countries. But they can harbor other infections.

Checking for Ticks on Yourself

  • Before you come indoors, strip off your clothes and dump them in the tub while you quarantine any ticks that may have hitched a ride.

  • Rake your fingers through your hair (and a comb if you have longer hair).

  • Use mirrors to get a good look at your whole body to find those sneaky ticks.

  • Throw your clothing directly into the wash to remove any hidden ticks.

Checking Pets for Ticks

  • Run your hands through your pet’s fur, and check less obvious places too, like under their arms and around their face.

  • If you see one tick, continue to search; there may be additional ticks elsewhere.

How to Remove a Tick

  • First, clean the bite area well.

  • Use pointed tweezers to get as close to the skin as possible to grab the tick by its head.

  • Pull up slowly and steadily. No twisting or jerking.

  • Clean the bite area and your hands afterwards.
