Meet Our Spooky Friends:

The Spiders!

Been noticing some spiders around the house lately? But don't worry we're here to help put your mind at ease and to give you some handy tips of how to manage them if they are bothering you.

As summer arrives, many of us see more spider webs appearing. Easier access to tasty food with the increase in flying insects, spiders love to munch on these! Also, summer is mating season for spiders, so they’re out and about, announcing themselves.

Types of Spiders You Might See

This time of year, you practically can’t avoid webbing spiders  the ones who construct those classic round webs at eye level. It’s easy to feel like your house is crawling with them, but remember: spiders would much prefer to be outside, where their food and possible partners are.

Let’s Replace Fear with Facts

A lot of our lovely clients are really scared of spiders, and we’re on hand to assist! You do need to know that spiders don’t eat people  and I’m sure you’re glad to hear that! They typically bite only when they are threatened.

A Few Words About Dangerous Spiders

Most of the spider species that you’ll encounter in Sydney are harmless, and not all of them bite. Unlike annoying mosquitoes or blood-sucking bed bugs, spiders tend to bite only when they feel threatened, and while their bite can lead to minor itching or rashes, they are generally harmless to humans. But a handful of spider bites can be dangerous, so it’s useful to know. So here are the six spiders to watch out for in Sydney:

  • Funnel Web Spider (bites can be serious)

  • Redback Spider (bites can be serious, but rare)

  • White Tail Spider

  • Mouse Spider

  • Trapdoor Spider (bites can be serious)

  • Wolf Spider

Spider Webs and How They Work

Do you not realize that spiders can spin webs without ever touching your home? Often they travel from trees and bushes by casting out a line of silk  a talent called ballooning. They look like they are flying through the air!

These little architects can reconstruct a web in an hour or two, so just knocking them down won’t make them leave.

Why We Need Spiders

Believe it or not, so many spiders are great allies when it comes to controlling those pesky bugs.

What’s a “Ghost Web”?

You may run into a so-called "ghost web." This is a web that’s still left lingering long after the spider has moved on or died. Silk is super sturdy and can sustain you for many months, if not years! So just because you see a lot of webs doesn’t mean there are heaps of spiders hiding out.

Consistency is Key

Regular prevention is key to keeping spiders at bay. One-time treatments or clearing webs can help, but if you don’t keep up the effort, those annoying flying insects (meals for the spiders!) But they’ll still stick around when the spiders return.

And, with regular pest control at the right locations around your home, you can cut down on that insect activity, leaving less for spiders to want to move in! What pest control ultimately aims to do is ensure that your home is a less attractive venue for them.

We’re here to help you make a comfy, spider-friendly space. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need help!
