Getting Away from Stinging Insects
Here are a few tips:
Hey there! Follow these useful tips to stay protected against those pesky flying pests:
1. Stay Safe from Stingers: If you’re allergic, of course, avoiding bee and wasp stings is essential, and so if you know of a potential nest, it’s a good idea to have it professionally removed. And if you do end up getting stung, please, go to the hospital immediately.
2. Be Aware: Remain vigilant for bee and hornet nests around your area. These little rascals are definitely territorial, so it’s best to give ’em some space so you don’t have any surprise run-ins.
3. No Swatting: If you notice a bee or wasp flying around, please don’t swat at it, as this can cause them to feel threatened.
4. Hold Your Breath: Did you know that bees can smell when you breathe out? If one does get too close, you may want to hold your breath a little bit to see if you don't attract them.
5. Choose Your Colors Wisely: Bees are attracted to darker colours by nature, so don’t wear anything dark and go for bright or light instead.
Should you be unlucky and cannot avoid a bee or wasp attack, do the following:
If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being stung by a bee or wasp, here’s what to do:
Make a Quick Escape: Get out of there as quickly as possible! The sooner you reach safety, the safer.
Stay Straight: Run straight in order to escape quickly.
Avoid Water: If you jump into a body of water you may think you’ll be safe, however, bees will wait for you to surface, so try to seek shelter instead.
Seek Shelter: Find a suitable shelter, this could be a home, a car, or even a bathroom that can be closed beneath you. And a single bee is a lot easier than a whole swarm!
Turn Off the Lights: Once you’re inside, turn off the lights. Bees are attracted to natural light, so they will make their way toward the windows rather than you.
Should you be VERY unlucky and get stung, please do the following:
And if you do get stung, here’s what to do:
1. Remove the Stinger: If you can see a stinger, gently remove it, as leaving it in allows more venom to be injected into your skin. Gently swipe it out with a straight edged object.
2. Cool It Down: Apply something cold to the area to help reduce swelling.
3. Clean Up: Wash the area with soap and water to keep it clean.
4. Get Help If Needed: If you know you’re allergic, don’t hesitate to seek medical help right away.
