HOW TO GET RID OF SPIDERS
Spiders are a fact of life for many Perth and WA homeowners. Though the majority are innocent, no one likes surprise eight-legged guests wandering through the house. Some are simply a bother, and others, like the redback spider, can be a very real health threat.
Spiders come in looking for what your house provides: a place to hide, food that is easy to catch and eat (bugs) and warmth. If your house has small holes in it, gaps, dark, undisturbed corners, this is the environment a spider looks for.
Here’s a guide from our very own pest experts to help you identify common household spiders in and around Perth:
Common House Spider
These are the ones you are most likely to encounter indoors. They tend to be light brown or grey, and small, generally less than 1 cm in size. They hang messy cobwebs in the corners, behind furniture or in garages and sheds. Although harmless, their webs can accumulate rapidly and give a space a neglected appearance.
Huntsman Spider
Huntsman spiders are large and quick, which means they are frightening to most people, but in fact, they’re harmless. The spiders typically spend their time on walls and ceilings and can reach a leg span of up to 15 cm. They don’t spin webs to trap prey; rather, they actively track insects. If you do find one indoors, it likely came inside by accident.
White-Tailed Spider
This thin, black or grey spider has a white mark on its abdomen and is most likely to hide in bed linens, towels, or under clothing. Although their bite isn’t poisonous, it can result in local irritation and swelling. They’re more likely to prey on other spiders than spin webs of their own.
Redback Spider
The redback is one of Australia's most notorious venomous spiders and is relatively small (approximately 1 cm) with a famously recognisable red stripe on its back. Females are the ones to look out for, as their bite can be very painful and symptomatic. Redbacks adore warm, dry places, including garden sheds, under outdoor furniture or in your roof void.
Black House Spider
These dark, hairy spiders make funnel webs in window frames, eaves and garden sheds. Their bite, while not lethal, can hurt. By nature, they are shy and seldom venture beyond their webs.
How to Keep Spiders Out of Your Perth Home
If you’re finding more spiders than you’d like, it may be time to take action. A few there during the summer months are not unusual, but large groups mean they have found a way in and a reason to stay.
Here are some prevention tips:
Seal cracks, gaps and holes around windows and doors
Turn off the outdoor lights at night so you don’t attract insects (spider food!)
Decluttering dark spots such as storage rooms and garages
Clean under beds and behind furniture regularly
Shake clothes, towels, and shoes before wearing in summertime (and year-round if possible)
